Garage door repair: what to know and what it costs

Last reviewed Reviewed by the Garage Repair Quote editorial team 5 min read 9 sources

Short answer

Most garage door repairs cost $150 to $350, per HomeGuide's January 2026 guide. Spring and cable jobs sit in that range. Expect a service call fee, often $50 to $100, and higher prices at night, on weekends and on holidays. A broken spring, a door off its track or a trapped car is worth a same-day call.

Key facts

  • Garage door repair costs $150 to $350 on average; spring replacement and cable repair each run $150 to $350, per HomeGuide (updated January 2026).[1]
  • HomeGuide puts emergency garage door cable repair at $250 to $350, because after-hours, weekend and holiday work carries premium pricing.[2]
  • Under the federal safety standard, a closing garage door operator must start to reverse within 2 seconds of hitting an obstruction.[7]
  • Homewyse's January 2026 calculator puts a basic garage door repair at $188 to $350 per door before it is adjusted for a ZIP code.[5]

What garage door repair covers

Garage door repair is service on the parts that lift, guide and control the door: springs, cables, rollers, tracks, hinges, panels, the opener and its safety sensors. Most calls involve one worn or broken part. Here is what HomeGuide's January 2026 guide lists for common jobs[1].

RepairTypical cost (HomeGuide, 2026)
Spring replacement (both torsion springs)$150 to $350[1]
Cable repair or replacement$150 to $350[1]
Chain repair$120 to $220[1]
Opener repair$100 to $200[1]
Safety sensor replacement$125 to $300[1]
Track replacement$125 to $300[1]
Door off its tracks, realign and repair$200 to $350[1]
Panel replacement$300 to $900 per panel[1]
Tune-up and inspection$100 to $250[1]

HomeGuide notes that minimum service fees may apply on top of these ranges[1]. Spring replacement is the most common repair it sees, and most springs last 10,000 to 20,000 open and close cycles, about 7 to 14 years in a typical home[1].

Homewyse builds its estimate a different way, from labor hours and supplies. Its January 2026 calculator starts a basic repair at $188 to $350 per door and assumes a 2 hour minimum labor charge[5]. Enter your ZIP code on its page and the range moves with local labor rates[5]. Our city pages below show what that ZIP adjustment does in Houston, Dallas and Chicago.

What counts as an emergency

Some garage door problems can wait for a weekday slot. Others are a safety or security problem now. Treat these as same-day calls:

  • The door is stuck open. Your home is open to the street, and the door may be held up by a single broken part.
  • A spring has broken. You may hear a loud bang from the garage, then the opener strains and the door barely moves. The spring carries most of the door's weight, so a door with a broken spring is heavy and can drop.
  • The door is off its track. A door hanging crooked or out of its rollers can fall. Stop using it.
  • A car is trapped inside. If you need the car for work, a medical visit or a child pickup, say so when you call.
  • The door will not reverse. Openers made for sale in the US since January 1, 1993 fall under a federal safety standard[6]. A closing door must start to reverse within 2 seconds of hitting an obstruction[7]. If yours does not, unplug the opener and keep people and pets clear until it is fixed.

While you wait, do not keep pressing the remote. Do not loosen or adjust springs, cables or the bottom brackets: they hold stored energy and can cause serious injury. Those parts are work for a trained garage door technician.

Plenty of problems are not emergencies: a noisy door, a slow opener, a worn weather seal or a remote that needs a new battery. Book those at normal rates.

How repair companies price a job

Most quotes have three parts.

  1. Service call or diagnostic fee. HomeGuide says most companies give free estimates, some charge $50 to $100 to come out, and the fee usually goes toward the repair or the first hour of labor[4].
  2. Parts and labor. Springs, cables and opener parts are priced per part, and labor is often bundled into a flat price for the job. Heavier insulated doors and double doors can need stronger or extra springs, which raises the price[1].
  3. Timing. Evening, weekend and holiday calls cost more. HomeGuide says emergency repairs outside normal hours carry premium charges[3], and it puts emergency cable repair at $250 to $350[2].

Ask for the full price, with any after-hours charge, before the technician is sent. If the fee is credited to the repair, ask for that in writing too.

How to pick a garage door company

A few questions sort out most companies:

  • What is the service call fee, and does it count toward the repair?
  • What is the total price for this repair, written down, before work starts?
  • Do you charge more tonight or this weekend, and how much?
  • What warranty comes with the parts, and what comes with the labor?
  • Do you carry springs and cables for my door on the truck?
  • Will you test the auto-reverse and the safety sensors when you finish?
  • Are you licensed or registered where I live, and are you insured?

HomeGuide suggests comparing at least 3 to 4 written quotes for non-urgent work and treating very low bids with care[1]. The City of Houston gives similar advice: get three bids and review each one[9].

Licensing depends on where you live. Some states and cities license or register this work and others do not. In Illinois, a home repair business must give you a signed written contract before starting work over $1,000, listing the total cost and the parts[8]. The same law requires a consumer rights pamphlet[8]. In Houston, the city says general contractors do not need a license, while electrical work needs a licensed electrical contractor registered with the city[9]. Each city page below covers the local rule.

Repair or replace?

Most single part failures are worth repairing. Replacement starts to make sense when panels are badly damaged, the door needs frequent repairs, or it lacks current safety features[1]. For scale, HomeGuide puts a new single door at $700 to $2,700 installed and a double door at $1,000 to $3,500[1].

When to call a pro

  • A spring or cable has broken, or the door is off its track: do not run the opener, and call a garage door technician.
  • The door will not reverse when it meets an object: unplug the opener until a technician checks the sensors and force settings[7].
  • Your car is trapped or the house cannot be closed: ask for a same-day visit and get the after-hours price before anyone is sent.
  • A new outlet or circuit is needed for an opener: that part is for a licensed electrician.

More questions

Is a broken garage door spring an emergency?

It is urgent if the door is stuck open or your car is stuck inside. The spring carries most of the door's weight, so the door can be very heavy to lift and may drop. Do not keep running the opener. A trained technician should replace torsion springs.

Do garage door companies charge to come out?

Many do. HomeGuide says some companies charge a service call fee of $50 to $100, and the fee usually goes toward the repair or the first hour of labor. Ask before you book.

Should I repair or replace my garage door?

Repair is usually the better buy for springs, cables, rollers and openers. HomeGuide puts a new single door at $700 to $2,700 installed, so replacement makes more sense when several panels are damaged or the door needs frequent repairs.
