Short answer
Stop using an off-track garage door: do not run the opener or force it back, leave it where it is and keep everyone clear. Clopay says forcing it can cause injury, so call a trained technician. Realigning an off-track door costs $200 to $350 (HomeGuide, 2026) or $100 to $300 (Fixr, 2025).
Key facts
- Clopay: a door that has come off its tracks usually jams and looks crooked; stop operating it immediately and contact a trained technician.[1]
- HomeGuide (Jan 2026): realigning and repairing an off-track garage door costs $200 to $350; track replacement costs $125 to $300.[2]
- Fixr (Jan 2025): repairing an off-track garage door costs $100 to $300.[4]
- HomeAdvisor (updated Jun 2026): if a bent track lets the door sag, the longer it goes the more panels or rollers may need replacing.[3]
What should I do if my garage door is off track?
Stop operating the door right away, leave it where it is and keep people and cars clear. Clopay says to stop using it immediately and contact a trained technician, because forcing the door or repairing it yourself can cause further damage or injury[1].
| Step | Why | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Stop using the opener and wall button | Running it can twist the door further | Clopay[1] |
| Do not pull the release cord unless the door is fully closed | A door with weak or broken springs may fall without warning | Chamberlain[5] |
| Keep everyone out from under the door | The door is no longer guided by its tracks | Clopay[1] |
| Call a technician | Realigning costs $200 to $350 (2026) | HomeGuide[2] |
Some DIY guides show how to hammer or pry rollers back into the track. We do not give those steps. The door is still hooked to springs and cables under high tension, and Clopay warns that self-repair can lead to injury[1].
How to tell the door is off track
Clopay says a door that has come off its tracks will usually jam and look crooked or uneven as it tries to move. You may see rollers popping out of the tracks or gaps between the door and the frame[1]. Other signs include a section that bows in or out, a loud bang followed by the door stopping, or one side sitting lower than the other.
Why garage doors come off track
These are the usual causes. Several often happen together, such as a car strike that bends the track and breaks a cable.
| Cause | What happens |
|---|---|
| Car or object hits the door or track | Bends the track or pushes rollers out |
| Broken lift cable | One side drops, so the door twists and the rollers on that side leave the track |
| Broken spring | The door loses balance and can tilt to one side[2] |
| Worn or broken rollers | Rollers lose their grip and jump the track |
| Bent or loose track | Genie says the track must be even; a bent section slows and catches the door[6] |
| Something in the track | Debris or a stored item blocks a roller |
| Opener keeps pushing a stuck door | Turns a small bind into a twisted door |
CPSC advises checking hardware and fittings to keep the door on track at all times, and says doors that bind or stick should be serviced by a professional[7].
Why you should not force it back
An off-track door is still hooked to its springs and cables. Those parts are under high tension, and a door partly out of its tracks is no longer guided. Clopay warns that trying to force the door or repair it yourself can cause further damage or even lead to injury[1]. Forcing it can also bend the track, crack panels or snap a cable.
Do not:
- Press the opener button or wall control "to see if it fixes itself."
- Push, kick or pry the door or the rollers back into the track.
- Pull the emergency release cord while the door is open or partly open. Chamberlain says to use the release only when the door is fully closed, and warns a door with weak or broken springs may fall rapidly and without warning[5].
- Stand or let children play under the door.
Do:
- Leave the door where it is.
- Unplug the opener only if you can reach the plug without standing under or beside the door, so nobody presses a remote by accident.
- Move cars and valuables away from the door's path if you can do it without passing under the door.
- Take photos for your records and for any insurance claim.
Garage door off track repair cost
| Job | Range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Realign and repair an off-track door | $200 to $350 | HomeGuide, Jan 2026[2] |
| Off-track repair | $100 to $300 | Fixr, Jan 2025[4] |
| Track replacement | $125 to $300 | HomeGuide, Jan 2026[2] |
| Track repair | $5 (a bracket) to $400 (full track) | HomeAdvisor, Jun 2026[3] |
| Roller replacement | $100 to $150 | Fixr, Jan 2025[4] |
The low end usually covers resetting the rollers and adjusting the track. Costs rise when the track, rollers, cables or panels are damaged. HomeAdvisor says a sagging door from a bent track can lead to more panel and roller damage the longer it goes[3]. If a car hit the door, also price panel work on the panel replacement cost page. What a technician will do
A technician will usually secure the door, check whether a spring or cable failed, release or control tension as needed, reseat the rollers and straighten or replace the track. Ask them to check the cables, rollers and hinges on both sides, since one failure often strains the others. After the repair, ask them to run the opener's reversal test before they leave.
When to call a pro
- The door is crooked, jammed or has rollers out of the track.
- A cable is loose or a spring has a gap (see broken garage door spring).
- A car or object hit the door or the track.
- Ask for a written quote that lists track, roller, cable and panel work separately.
More questions
Can I fix a garage door that is off track myself?
We do not recommend it. The door is still connected to springs and cables under high tension, and Clopay says forcing the door or repairing it yourself can cause further damage or injury. Off-track repair is a technician job.
Is it safe to close a garage door that is off track?
No. Do not run the opener or push the door. A door off its rollers can bind, twist or drop. Leave it in place, keep people and cars clear and call a technician.
Does homeowners insurance cover a garage door hit by a car?
It depends on your policy and the cause. Ask your agent whether the home or auto policy applies before the repair, and keep photos and the written estimate.
Why did my garage door come off track?
The usual causes are a car or object hitting the door or track, a broken lift cable or spring that lets one side drop, worn rollers, a bent or loose track, or debris blocking a roller. Several often happen together.
