Short answer
Garage door opener installation in Dallas typically costs $300 to $890 in 2026, unit and labor included, based on HomeGuide's national range with labor adjusted for Dallas repair wages (BLS, May 2025). A chain drive sits at the low end; belt, direct drive and smart features raise it, and new wiring adds an electrician.
Key facts
- BLS puts the May 2025 median wage for general maintenance and repair workers at $23.49 an hour in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX metro, against $23.84 nationally, a ratio of 0.985.[1]
- HomeGuide (Jul 2025) puts a garage door opener at $300 to $900 installed nationally: the unit is $150 to $500 and labor $150 to $400.[3]
- Homewyse applies a 0.88 location factor to labor for ZIP 75201. Applying it to Homewyse's basic 1/2 HP chain drive replacement gives about $405 to $688 by our arithmetic, against $428 to $732 at its default ZIP.[6]
- Dallas says electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician unless a homeowner proves their expertise to the Chief Electrical Inspector.[7]
Garage door opener installation cost in Dallas at a glance
Our Dallas estimates for 2026, opener and installation labor included. "Typical" is the midpoint of the range.
| Opener job | Low | Typical | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Any opener, installed (all types) | $300 | $600 | $890 |
| Chain drive, installed | $300 | $470 | $640 |
| Belt drive, installed | $350 | $600 | $840 |
| Direct drive, installed | $450 | $670 | $890 |
The type rows add HomeGuide's unit price for each drive[3] to its $150 to $400 labor range[3], adjusted for Dallas wages. They are our arithmetic, not HomeGuide quotes.
How we got this number
- National price. HomeGuide puts an installed opener at $300 to $900, made up of a $150 to $500 unit and $150 to $400 of labor[3].
- Dallas wage factor. There is no wage code for garage door installers, so we use SOC 49-9071, Maintenance and Repair Workers, General. Its May 2025 median hourly wage was $23.49 in Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX[1] against $23.84 for the US[2]: a factor of 0.985.
- Our estimate. Keep the unit price, multiply labor by 0.985, round to the nearest $10.
| Job | National range | Labor in range | BLS factor | Our Dallas estimate | Homewyse, ZIP 75201 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Opener, installed | $300 to $900[3] | $150 to $400[3] | 0.985[1][2] | $300 to $890 | about $405 to $668 (new install)[5] |
| Opener, replaced | n/a | n/a | n/a | n/a | about $405 to $688[6] |
The math: $150 + ($150 × 0.985) is $297.75, rounded to $300. $500 + ($400 × 0.985) is $894, rounded to $890.
The Homewyse view. Homewyse models a basic 1/2 HP chain drive with two remotes and a keypad. At its default ZIP it gives $426 to $706 for a new install, with 2.2 hours of labor at $118 to $251[5], and $428 to $732 for a replacement, with 2.7 hours at $142 to $302[6]. For ZIP 75201 it applies a 0.88 labor factor[5]. Applied to those line items, that gives the ZIP 75201 figures above. Homewyse stopped responding before we could read its live ZIP 75201 output, so treat them as our arithmetic on its published inputs. Both sources agree Dallas labor runs at or a little under the national level.
What changes the price in Dallas
- Drive type. The opener you choose is the biggest driver of price[4]. Chain is cheapest and loudest; direct drive is quietest and costs the most[3].
- Garage heat. HomeAdvisor says belts are sensitive to temperature extremes[4]. If your garage is not air conditioned, ask what the warranty says about heat.
- Wiring. A first-time install with no ceiling outlet needs electrical work, and Dallas requires a licensed electrician for it[7]. HomeGuide prices running power to a garage at $10 to $25 per linear foot[3].
- Add-ons. Battery backup, Wi-Fi, cameras and keypads raise the unit price[3].
- Removal. Taking down the old opener adds time[4], though HomeGuide says most companies include it[3].
Questions to ask a Dallas contractor
- Are you registered with the City of Dallas, and does anything in this job need a permit[8]?
- Is there a working outlet where the opener goes, or will I need a licensed electrician[7]?
- What horsepower and drive type are you quoting, and why for my door?
- Does the price include removing and hauling away the old opener?
- Will you test the auto-reverse before you leave? Federal rules require entrapment protection on residential openers[9].
When to call a pro
- Any first-time install where new wiring is needed: hire a licensed electrician for that part[7].
- The door feels heavy or slams: check the springs before blaming the opener (see Dallas spring replacement cost).
- The closing door does not reverse when it meets an object: stop using the opener until it is serviced[9].
- For type-by-type national prices, see garage door opener installation cost.
More questions
Do I need an electrician to install a garage door opener in Dallas?
Only if the job needs new wiring, such as an outlet in the ceiling. Dallas says electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician, unless a homeowner proves their expertise to the Chief Electrical Inspector. Plugging a replacement opener into an existing outlet is not new wiring.
Is opener installation cheaper in Dallas than the national average?
By a few dollars at most. BLS puts Dallas repair wages 1.5% under the national median, so only the labor part moves. Homewyse's ZIP 75201 factor trims labor more, by 12%, which takes roughly $20 to $45 off its basic chain drive job.
Should I pick a belt drive opener for a Dallas garage?
A belt drive is quieter, which matters with a bedroom over the garage. HomeAdvisor notes belts are sensitive to temperature extremes, so ask the installer how the model they quote handles a hot, unconditioned garage.
