Garage door sizes: standard single and double door dimensions

Last reviewed Reviewed by the Garage Repair Quote editorial team 4 min read 6 sources

Short answer

Standard garage door sizes are 8 or 9 feet wide for a single door and 16 or 18 feet wide for a double door, usually 7 or 8 feet tall, per door maker Amarr and HomeGuide. That makes 8x7, 9x7, 16x7 and 18x7 the common sizes. Some makers also list 10-foot singles and 20-foot doubles.

Key facts

  • Amarr (Mar 2024): standard single doors are 8, 9 or 10 feet wide and double doors 16, 18 or 20 feet wide, in heights of 7 or 8 feet.[1]
  • Clopay: a standard torsion spring system needs 12 inches of headroom and an extension spring system 10 inches; side room must be at least 3-3/4 inches on each side.[3]
  • Amarr: most doors with an opener need 15 inches of headroom, and backroom of door height plus 50 inches with an opener.[2]
  • HomeGuide (Jul 2025): a single 9 by 7 foot overhead door costs $300 to $700 and a double 16 by 8 foot door $600 to $1,200, door only.[5]

Standard garage door sizes

Door makers list these standard sizes[1]:

DoorStandard widthsStandard heightsCommon sizes
Single (one car)8, 9 or 10 feet7 or 8 feet8x7, 9x7, 8x8, 9x8
Double (two car)16, 18 or 20 feet7 or 8 feet16x7, 18x7, 16x8

Sizes are written width by height, so a 16x7 garage door is 16 feet wide and 7 feet tall. HomeGuide also lists 8x7 and 9x7 as standard single sizes and 16x7 and 16x8 as standard doubles[6].

7 foot or 8 foot tall? Both are standard heights[1]. An 8 foot door gives more clearance for trucks, roof racks and lifted vehicles. Check that your opening, headroom and opener can handle the taller door before ordering.

Large garage doors. Openings outside the standard sizes, such as a tall RV door or a 12 by 14 foot opening, are usually made to measure. HomeGuide puts custom or made-to-measure doors at $800 to $10,000, depending on size and options[5].

Garage door prices by size

HomeGuide's door-only ranges for aluminum and steel models[5]:

Width7 feet tall8 feet tall
8 feet$250 to $2,200$375 to $2,400
9 feet$300 to $2,400$400 to $2,800
10 feet$350 to $2,700$450 to $3,000
12 feet$450 to $3,100$550 to $3,250
14 feet$550 to $3,400$600 to $3,500
16 feet$600 to $3,800$700 to $4,000
18 feet$700 to $4,500$800 to $5,000
20 feet$1,000 to $5,500$1,200 to $6,000

The wide ranges cover everything from basic single-layer steel to insulated designer doors. For a narrower starting point, HomeGuide lists a basic single 9 by 7 foot door at $300 to $700 and a double 16 by 8 foot door at $600 to $1,200[5]. Installed prices are on the installation cost page.

How to measure for a garage door

You need five measurements. A door company will re-measure before ordering, but these tell you what fits.

MeasurementWhereMinimum needed
WidthAcross the finished openingMatches the door width[2]
HeightFloor to the underside of the headerMatches the door height[2]
Side roomFrom each side of the opening to the nearest wall or obstruction3-3/4 inches each side[2][3]
HeadroomFrom the top of the opening to the ceiling or lowest obstruction10 inches (extension springs) or 12 inches (torsion springs)[3]; about 15 inches with an opener[2]
BackroomFrom the door opening to the back wall or first obstructionDoor height plus 18 inches[3]; plus 50 inches with an opener[2]

Tips:

  • Measure in more than one place. Amarr says to use the smallest width and height you find so the door does not rub the frame[1]. Floors and headers are often not level.
  • Use the opening, not the old door. Amarr says the opening size is the size of your new door[2].
  • Note obstructions. Pipes, lights, ductwork and storage racks count against headroom and side room.
  • Plan for the opener. Clopay says an opener needs extra headroom and may need extra backroom[3].

Low headroom and high lift

Clopay's track guide gives these headroom needs[4]:

Track typeHeadroom needed
Standard radius, 12 inchAt least 12 inches
Standard radius, 15 inch14.25 inches
Low headroom, front mountAbout 9 inches
Low headroom, rear mount4.5 inches
High liftAt least 9.5 inches, more the higher the door rises
Vertical liftAbout the door height plus clearance

Low-headroom kits solve tight garages. High-lift and vertical-lift track suit tall garages, such as one with a car lift or a high ceiling[4].

Changing the size of the opening

Going from two single doors to one double door, or widening an opening, is a framing job. Load-bearing headers may need an engineer and a permit. HomeGuide lists resizing an opening at $200 to $1,000 or more[5].

When to call a pro

  • Your measurements fall short of the minimum headroom, side room or backroom.
  • The opening is not a standard size, or you want to widen it.
  • You are moving to a taller door and need new track, springs or an opener.
  • To confirm the order: the installer should measure before the door is made.

More questions

Is an 8 ft or 9 ft garage door better for a single garage?

Both are standard single widths. A 9 foot door gives more room on each side of the car, and HomeGuide's price table shows it costs a little more than an 8 foot door. Your framed opening decides which one fits.

What size is a double garage door?

A double door is usually 16 feet wide, with 18 and 20 feet also standard, per Amarr. Heights are typically 7 or 8 feet, so 16x7 is the most familiar size.

What is a high lift garage door?

It is a track setup that lets the door rise higher up the wall before it turns overhead, for garages with tall ceilings. Clopay says high-lift track needs at least 9.5 inches above the door, and more the higher the door rises.
