Last reviewed Reviewed by the Garage Repair Quote editorial team 3 min read 9 sources

Short answer

A new garage door in Houston typically costs $690 to $2,670 installed for a single door and $990 to $3,470 for a double door in 2026, based on national HomeGuide prices adjusted for Houston repair wages from the BLS. Material, insulation, wind rating and flood-zone permits move the price.

  • For ZIP code 77002, the Homewyse calculator (May 2026) estimates $931 to $1,501 to install a basic steel garage door, against its national starting range of $969 to $1,573.[2]

  • Houston's flood storm-damage guide lists replacing garage doors among repairs that need a flood permit, and says permits are required for all repairs in special flood hazard areas.[6]
  • Houston's minimum fee for most Building Code Enforcement permits is $91.06, plus a $33.56 administrative fee, effective January 1, 2026.[7]

Single (one-car) door$700 to $2,700[1]$690$2,670
Double (two-car) door$1,000 to $3,500[1]$990$3,470
Basic steel door, Homewyse ZIP 77002$969 to $1,573[2]$931$1,501

The first two rows are our estimates. The last row is a published local figure: the Homewyse calculator run for downtown ZIP code 77002. It prices a 25 gauge steel, 4 panel roll-up door with basic labor and supplies[2]. Both sources land in the same band for a plain steel door.

How we got this number

HomeGuide puts the national price at $700 to $2,700 installed for a single door and $1,000 to $3,500 for a double, with professional labor adding $200 to $500[1]. We kept the door price fixed and adjusted only that labor.

For the labor factor we used Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data. There is no federal code for garage door installers, so we used Maintenance and Repair Workers, General (SOC 49-9071). In May 2025 its median hourly wage was $22.46 in the Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands, TX metro area[3][5] and $23.84 nationally[4], a factor of 0.942.

As a check, the Homewyse calculator for ZIP 77002 puts basic installation labor at $178 to $378 per door, against $202 to $430 at its default location[2]. That is a bigger local discount than our BLS factor, but it applies to a smaller share of the job.

What changes the price in Houston

  • Flood zones. Houston lists "replacing windows, exterior doors, interior doors leading to an attached garage and garage doors" among repairs needing a flood permit[6]. In special flood hazard areas, the city requires permits for all repairs[6]. Check the FEMA flood map for your lot first.
  • Permit fees. The city's 2026 notice lists a $91.06 minimum for most Building Code Enforcement permits and a $33.56 administrative fee[7]. Your actual fee depends on the permit type.
  • Wind ratings. Under the 2021 IRC, the door label must show the positive and negative design wind pressure rating[8]. The local authority is the final word on what rating a job needs[8].
  • Windstorm suburbs. TDI's Harris County program covers parts of La Porte, Morgan's Point, Pasadena, Seabrook and Shoreacres east of State Highway 146; the city of Houston is not listed[9].
  • Heat and humidity. An insulated door helps if the garage is attached or used as a workspace. Steel doors near the coast should be checked for rust-resistant finishes.

Questions to ask a Houston contractor

  • Is my address in a flood zone, and will you pull the flood permit?
  • What design wind pressure is this door rated for, and will it carry the label?
  • Does the price include removing and hauling away the old door?
  • Are new springs, tracks and weather seals included?
  • What warranty covers the door, and what covers the installation?

When to call a pro

  • Any new door: springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained installer.
  • The house is in a flood zone or the door was storm damaged: confirm the permit before work starts[6].
  • You live in a windstorm program area: use an installer who can document the door's rating.
  • The opening shows rot or framing damage once the old door is off.

More questions

Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in Houston?

If the house is in a special flood hazard area, yes: Houston's flood guide lists replacing garage doors among repairs that need a flood permit. Outside flood zones, the city guides we read do not settle it, so call the Houston Permitting Center before the job.

Is a new garage door cheaper in Houston than the national average?

Slightly. A ZIP 77002 run of the Homewyse calculator came in about 4% to 5% under its national starting range, and BLS puts Houston repair wages about 6% under the national median. The door itself is most of the price, so the savings are modest.

Does a new garage door in Houston need to be wind rated?

Doors built to the 2021 International Residential Code carry a label showing their design wind pressure, and the local authority decides what pressure a job needs. In the TDI windstorm area, which includes parts of five Harris County cities but not Houston, ask for certification paperwork.
