  • HomeGuide (Oct 2025) puts torsion spring replacement at $150 to $350 nationally, parts and labor included.[1]
  • HomeAdvisor (updated Jun 2026) puts labor for a residential spring repair at $75 to $150.[2]

Our Houston estimates, rounded to the nearest $10, next to the national ranges they come from:

JobNational rangeHouston estimate, lowHouston estimate, high
Torsion springs (pair, single door)$150 to $350[1]$150$340
Extension springs$120 to $200[1]$120$190
Double door, spring replacement$300 to $600[1]$300$590

HomeAdvisor's national average for a spring job is $250[2]. We did not find a published spring price built from Houston data. These are planning numbers, not quotes.

How we got this number

We started with HomeGuide's national installed prices[1]. HomeGuide does not split out labor, so we used HomeAdvisor's labor figure for a residential spring repair: $75 to $150 for a one to two hour job[2]. The rest of the price is parts and other costs, which we left unchanged.

For local labor, we used the Bureau of Labor Statistics. There is no federal job code for garage door technicians, so we used the closest one: Maintenance and Repair Workers, General (SOC 49-9071). In May 2025, its median hourly wage was $22.46 in the Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands, TX metro area[3][5] and $23.84 nationally[4]. That gives a Houston labor factor of 0.942.

Torsion pairLowHigh
National installed price[1]$150$350
Labor portion[2]$75$150
Parts and other (difference)$75$200
Labor times 0.942$70.65$141.30
Our Houston estimate$150$340

The extension and double-door rows use the same labor figure. HomeAdvisor says double-door springs cost more but the labor is the same[2]. Mixing two publishers is a limit of this method, and so is using a general repair wage for a specialized trade.

What changes the price in Houston

  • Humidity and rust. Gulf Coast air is damp. Rusted springs, cables and bottom brackets are often replaced in the same visit, which adds parts and time.
  • Door weight. Heavier doors need stronger springs[1]. Insulated doors cost $250 to $400 for new springs nationally[1].
  • Wind-rated doors. Since the 2021 International Residential Code, garage doors carry a label with their design wind pressure[6]. DASMA says the local authority has the final word on wind load questions[6]. Ask whether the replacement springs keep the door's rating intact.
  • Windstorm area suburbs. In Harris County, TDI lists parts of La Porte, Morgan's Point, Pasadena, Seabrook and Shoreacres east of State Highway 146 in its windstorm program; the city of Houston is not listed[7]. Owners there may need paperwork the technician can provide.
  • Timing. Evening, weekend and holiday calls carry premium charges[1].

Questions to ask a Houston contractor

  • Are you replacing both springs, and what cycle rating are they?
  • Does the price include new cables and rollers, or are those extra?
  • Will the new springs match the door's weight and keep its wind rating?
  • Is there a trip fee or an after-hours charge?
  • What warranty covers the springs, and what covers the labor?

When to call a pro

  • Any broken, gapped or stretched spring: springs hold high tension and can cause serious injury[1]. Do not try to adjust or remove one.
  • The door is crooked, a cable is slack or the door drops fast.
  • A broken spring has left a car trapped or the house unsecured before a storm.
  • For general Houston repair prices and permit rules, see the Houston garage door repair guide.

More questions

Is spring replacement cheaper in Houston than the national average?

Slightly. BLS puts the Houston median wage for general repair workers about 6% under the national median, so the labor part of the bill tends to run a little lower. Parts cost about the same everywhere, so the total drops by $10 or less on most jobs.

Do I need a permit to replace garage door springs in Houston?

None of the City of Houston permit guides we read address a spring swap by itself. Flood-zone rules apply to replacing a whole garage door, not to springs. If the job grows into a new door, ask the company about permits first.

Why did my Houston quote come in higher than $340?

Common reasons are a double or insulated door, cables or a torsion bar replaced in the same visit, or an evening or weekend call. HomeGuide puts double-door spring jobs at $300 to $600 nationally.
